In March 2020, the world shut down due to the Covid-19 pandemic, leaving hundreds of

thousands of people in absolute isolation. With no need to leave home, many people stopped dressing up and wearing makeup, myself included. Gradually, I noticed something different about myself, though I couldn't pinpoint what it was. It wasn't until my birthday, when I dressed up to go out with my husband, that I realized how important it is for me to dress up to feel good about myself.

Many people associate the world of makeup and fashion with frivolity. However, there are studies and sciences that indicate that fashion and makeup go beyond that. Fashion psychology focuses on analyzing how color, shape, image, style, and cultural and social norms directly and indirectly affect people's behavior, influencing our emotions positively or negatively.

The Psychology of Fashion

A. Hernández mentions a psychological term called "enclothed cognition." When an article of clothing with a specific meaning is worn, these garments can influence our mental state. The fabrics used to create clothing pieces can also influence your mood. Some natural fabrics that can have a positive impact include linen and bamboo.

Benefits of Makeup

Regarding makeup, research from Chiba University in Japan indicates that the routine of applying makeup strengthens the mind. Applying makeup at the same time every day creates a habit that helps prevent senile dementia. Additionally, makeup improves self-esteem by highlighting the facial features we like the most.

Final Reflection

It's understandable that the world of makeup and fashion can be seen as frivolous, especially due to the way new collections are marketed and promoted. However, as mentioned earlier, they can positively affect our mood and mental health. It all depends on your style and preferences.
